"Let’s stop "tolerating" or "accepting" difference, as if we’re so much better for not being different in the first place. Instead, let’s celebrate difference, because in this world it takes a lot of guts to be different." - Kate Bornstein
In 2010, UNESCO reported that only 2 per cent of differently abled children in India were enrolled in schools. Luckily, there are some who are ready to change this depressing figure.
Every child has the right to grow up in a safe environment. Unfortunately in India that's not always the case, especially when one is disabled. Many children who are disabled in India end up on the streets and they have to beg for money to survive. That’s why some NGO's and organisations put forth some audacious efforts to build these children's home, to make a difference.
This winter I got the opportunity to explore the different aspect of my inner core by providing some helping hands in such Organisation named Disha Foundation which is contributing to the creation of a society which provides equal opportunity to persons with disability, to live with dignity and to realize their maximum potential.
The whole thing started with the awesome experience of painting workshop 'INDRADHANUSH' for children at Disha. The eternal beauty of nature, the State craving for unity, a combination of animals fused into a human being, fishermen on their hunt, and many more were captured by specially-abled children . Using crayons on chart paper, these 'Stars on Earth' had a field day at the week- long celebration of Disability Awareness Week.
The physical and mental constraint of these children does not stop them exploring their creative skills, the skills that I could never dreamt of. Being nasty at painting I was the most flabbergasted person there. They carved emotions out of their own imaginations, what they thought and their imaginations about the fictional world.
The second day was even more fabulous and legendary. It was International Day of People with Disability (December 3) and students showcased their different abilities through dance and emotional skit to culminate the week long celebration.
Have you ever imagined representing your country in olympics or any other event?? This could be a reverie for many of us. But what if I tell you that Nand Kishore Sharma bagged Gold, Silver and Bronze medals(skating) in the special Olympics, Athens (2011). Meeting Nand Kishore, listening to him about his determination in his own way and the feeling of going abroad, meeting personalities of his own kind was a delightful experience. Dhirti Surana was selected to pay in National Badminton Championship Pudducherry - 2010 and there are many more keeping the Tricolour on paramount.
After the overwhelming start of the week the next day was ordinary day for them, they came from their home happily some by auto some by their own means with their parents. All students proceeded for the prayers and I submerged into the memories of my own schooldays. Reminiscence of those days made me feel alive, the way of morning exercise and the enthusiasm of National Anthem at the end was just astonishing.
Teaching methodology in the class was very much different from the usual school. Rather than emphasizing on alphabets childrens are made familiar with the day to day things in life using various tools and computers.
Overall the whole thing was worth gaining and added another beneficial chapter in my life exploring the other side of the mirror with the reflection of sweet and brightest students and some cherishable memories with them.
