It is a great privilege to born and grow in the democratic country like Indian where I have the full right of freedom, speech etc. which some country does not have. So in some contests I consider myself to be lucky enough that I bought up in such a atmosphere where after every 5 years essence in the year turns different make you feel alive and active part in the crores of population. Such privileges are given to each and every individual of India to be a part of the growing nation and become a better citizen and work for the progress and growth of the country.
Today I got the opportunity to use one of my right for the first time and I was very much enthusiastic to use the same. I cast my vote today to elect my leader who I hope will look after the welfare of the people and bring out the truth inside ''Democracy is government of the people, for the people and by the people'. Since independence, every citizen above the age of 18 years (21 years until 1989 when it was amended and brought down to 18 on March 28, 1989) has enjoyed this right and elected his/her leader. And in a democratic form of government, people deemed it the right way to choose and elect their leaders. However, due to many factors even being capable of casting their vote some people doesn't' choose to vote.
Corruption, scams and scandals have become so synonymous with the elected Indian leaders over the years that people have begun to value their right to vote all the more and do not wish to waste it. In Rajasthan, it was seen in last election in 2008, that percentage of voting was more in rural areas compared to Urban.
So, to increase the participation in election of common educated masses On 27 September 2013, the Supreme Court of India ruled that the right to register a "none of the above" vote in elections should apply. The judges said that this "would lead to a systemic change in polls and political parties will be forced to project clean candidates". "Democracy is all about choices and voters will be empowered by this right of negative voting," said the order passed by a bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam.
But since election commission already clarified that although the votes registered as NOTA are counted, they will not change the outcome of the election process, if the number of electors who had utilised the NOTA (None Of The Above candidates) option in the EVM or Ballot paper exceeded the votes polled by any of the candidates, the candidate with the highest number of votes would be declared winner.
This decision disappointed me and I think now NOTA will not be so much effective that it could have, if implemented with different intentions.
But still for those who think that Why I should vote let me give you some simple assertions:
- If you don’t exercise the right to vote, you’ll be a hypocrite when you complain about politics.
- You vote for your favorite TV show, non-profit org, & sports team all the time, then why not General elections.
- There are worse ways to spend 10 minutes.
- Every vote counts and there are examples when people lost or won by just 1 vote.
- It is a right and honour to demonstrate the respect for the country.
It can't be denied that the recent democratic experience in India has not been encouraging. For the past several years, India has been struggling with rampant corruption, unsure economy, and unclear foreign policy. Election after election has seen ineffective governments come to power that have done more harm than good. However, not casting one's vote will only worsen the condition. It is our duty as responsible citizens of India to make informed decisions and choose the best candidate from those presented. Moreover, with reforms like Right to Reject gaining wider support, it wouldn't be long before the system of elections is improved.
