Common Admission Test(CAT) - 2013



Common Admission Test (CAT) is an all India level national test, conducted by IIMs as entrance exam for getting admissions in top IIMs and leading management institutes of the country.

CAT Eligibility

The candidate must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA [45% in case of the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Differently Abled (DA) (It may also referred to as Persons with Disability (PWD) category)], awarded by any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

Test Duration and Pattern


From the year 2012, there are only two sections in the CAT exams:


• Quantitative Ability & Date Interpretation
• Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning

Each section contains 30 questions and candidates are allotted 70 minutes each to attempt these sections. A 15 minute tutorial will be provided at the start of the test.

Each correct answers carries 1 mark and incorrect deducts 1/3 mark.

• Installment payments, Partnership, Clocks
• Probability, Permutation & Combination

• Averages, Percentages & Partnerships
• Time-Speed-Distance, Work and Time
• Number system

Date Interpretation and Logical Reasoning -

• Date Interpretation based on text, Date Interpretation based on graphs and tables.
• Graphs can be column graphs, Graphs representing area, Bar graphs, Pie chart, Venn – diagram, etc.
• Critical reasoning, Visual reasoning, Assumption-Premise-Conclusion, statements and Conclusions, Cause and effects, Matrix arrangements, etc.

GK/GA/BA -

• Current Affairs, Business, Punch lines of companies, Major corporate events
• Science, History, Geography, International Organization
• Important quotations
• Social issues, Sports, Finance, automobiles, Entertainments, Politics, etc.
• Famous awards and prizes
• World records
• Books and authors


Admission Process

List of shortlisted candidates for the next level of selection will be made available on the individual IIM websites. Each IIM will send interview letters to the candidates it has short-listed. The criteria for short-listing varies from IIM to IIM. For more information you may refer the admissions policies of IIMs.

Friendship Day : In train, with 'Watsapp' and 'No Gazing' Girls

First of all Happy Friendship Day to all my friends, friends of friends and so on. This friendship day was a kind of different for me as I spent most of the time in travelling. I went to Malpura this Saturday for police verification of passport. I went inside the police station for the very first time in my life although the reason was not serious. Due to lot of travelling in very little time and prevailing illness I started feeling feverish. To attend Monday classes to mark my presence in attendance sheet and not to miss any surprise quizzes I decided to return on Sunday itself and went to railway station of "Pink City"  half an hour before the schedule despite of feeling not well.
